Destination Weddings in Mexico — and the Local Wedding Customs to Incorporate
There’s a reason that celebrities love getting married in Mexico, specifically the Riviera Maya — including Jason Aldean, who tied the knot right here at Mahekal Beach Resort. We’ve got beautiful scenery, plus incredible rich cultural offerings to enjoy after the ceremony. Here’s a guide to Mexican destination weddings, including the local traditions that many couples observe.
Before the Wedding
Many couples make a special trip to Mexico to iron out the wedding logistics before the wedding: not just the venue and dates, based on the scenery and weather you prefer, but also the financial aspects of international marriages. Along with figuring out and working within your budget, it will be necessary to either seek out Mexican caterers, musicians, florists, and other contractors, or figure out an invoicing plan with contractors back home. Don’t forget you’ll need to observe the laws surrounding Mexican weddings, as well — even submitting certain legal and medical documents to the government before the big day.
To keep track of everything, and ensure your marriage is recognized by the government, we recommend hiring a wedding planner. If you need any assistance, the pros at Mahekal are more than happy to help.
The Wedding Itself
You’ve nailed down the logistical aspects, sent out the invites, finalized your wedding registry, and hopped on the plane. Now it’s time for the ceremony itself. Consider paying tribute to the surrounding culture by respectfully incorporating a local tradition, like presenting the bride with 13 gold coins, a Catholic custom that references Jesus and his 12 apostles — or being united with a “wedding lasso” of orange blossoms and rosary beads. At the party, you can additionally listen to mariachi bands, sip sangria, or invite guests to partake in a Mexican “money dance.” Yet another tradition is the tornaboda, a second party held just for your closest friends and family.
After the Wedding
The destination wedding is over — now it’s time to simply relax and enjoy the destination itself. Whether you and your partner are honeymooning here in Mexico, or just soaking up the scenery with guests before honeymooning elsewhere, take some time to experience the world-class dining, nightlife, and shopping. Nature lovers will also enjoy scouting out lush jungle foliage, glimmering cenotes, and enchanting dive sites.
